Memorial Service and Fundraising Event for 5.12 Earthquake at Harvard - Co-organized by HMS-CBSO
A memorial service and candlelight vigil was held on Sunday (May 18, 2008) at Harvard’s MemorialChurch, marking the culmination of university-wide effort by Chinese students at the University to mourn the dead and to help survivors in the Sichuan earthquake.
Fundraising activities have been held since last week in different schools of the university.By Sunday, more than $31,000 was raised.Organizers are also in talks with companies for matching that amount, according to Li Gang, a key organizer of the event.
"If we have choice, I hope the money can be used to rebuild schools," said a donator at the event who donated $3,000 but would only identify himself as Wu.
Li, from HarvardMedicalSchool, said it was also the organizers’ intention to use the money for education.
The Sunday service brought together about 500 people -- students and scholars from the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan as well as Harvard faculty members, American students and international students from other countries.
Church pastor Rev. Jonathan C. Page and Harvard professor in humanitarian crisis management Jennifer Leaning both called for support that transcends boundaries in face of a human disaster like the one in Sichuan.
Liu Jianing, ceremony master of the event, said what struck her the most had been the support from people from all different backgrounds.
"You can tell that people attending are of different races, from different countries and have different faith, but they all came to this event because they all cherish life," said Liu, who is also from the medical school.
The Sunday memorial service was a joint endeavor by HarvardMedicalSchool, Business school, Kennedy School of Government, LawSchool, Harvard School of Public Health Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and HarvardCollege. About 30 organizers pulled together the event during their final exam period, which is the busiest time of the school year.

HMS-CBSO Launching Dinner & Chinese Lantern Festival Celebration
[January, 2007]
In general, our events & activities will include:
A. Conferences in biomedical sciences and technology for the Harvard Chinese community
Many distinguished Chinese scientists and researchers are faculty at Harvard or at other institutes all over the world. High profile conferences held at least annually and hosted or co-organized by HMS-CBSO will offer great opportunities for large-scale interaction with leading Chinese biologists on cutting edge science and technology.
Major themes of our conferences will include:
- Milestone discoveries and latest achievements in biomedical sciences and cutting edge technologies by Chinese researchers at Harvard, in the U.S. and throughout the world.
- Strategies to improve the scientific research environment, productivity, and life science education in mainland China, as well as the Chinese community in the U.S.
B. Seminars for Chinese professor-student interaction
In addition to conferences, HMS-CBSO will organize a series of interactive seminars with outstanding Chinese professors, featuring their research work and highlighting successful career pathways in academia.
C. Panel discussions with Chinese Harvard alumni
These panel discussions help students interact informally with successful Chinese Harvard alumni in both academia and industry. A variety of topics from adjustment to life at Harvard to planning one?ˉs career will be chosen and addressed based on students?ˉ interests.
D. Interaction with mainland China
Most Chinese students in the Harvard community are from mainland China and follow the development of scientific research and education in China. Collaborating with local Chinese consuls, HMS-CBSO will help organize formal reception/information sessions for various Chinese delegations such as Chinese overseas recruiting groups.
E. Social activities for Chinese community in biomedical sciences
Frequent social events in forms of journal club, data club, new students and faculty welcoming parties, celebrating Chinese traditional festivals etc. will be organized by HMS-CBSO throughout the year to help build up a warm Chinese community that will provide social and intellectual support for Chinese students.
